Summary Information

Since the introduction of publicly accessible direct current fast charging (DCFC) systems during the EV Project in 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy and others have conducted surveys on deployment and use of DCFC equipment. The EV project deployed over 100 DCFC that used the CHAdeMO charging standard, which was included on all participating Nissan Leaf vehicles, adopted by Japanese automakers. The EV project installed DCFC in eight states in both metropolitan areas and along transportation corridors in rural areas.

System Costs

DCFC complexes without energy storage or photovoltaic systems:
  • Capital costs for a DCFC complex with a six-vehicle charging capacity and maximum 50 kWh unit power output is estimated to be $382,500 when deployed in a community setting and $389,500 when deployed along a corridor. The monthly operating costs are $13,791 when deployed in a community setting and $14,229 when deployed along a corridor.
  • Capital costs for a DCFC complex with a six-vehicle charging capacity and maximum 350 kWh unit power output is estimated to be $1,721,500 when deployed in a community setting and $1,728,000 when deployed along a corridor. The monthly operating costs are $41,725 when deployed in a community setting and $42,893 when deployed along a corridor.
DCFC complexes with energy storage or photovoltaic systems:
  • Capital costs for a DCFC complex with a six-vehicle charging capacity and maximum 50 kWh unit power output is estimated to be $502,000 when deployed in a community setting and $574,000 when deployed along a corridor. The monthly operating costs are $13,571 when deployed in a community setting and $14,221 when deployed along a corridor.
  • Capital costs for a DCFC complex with a six-vehicle charging capacity and maximum 350 kWh unit power output is estimated to be $1,636,500 when deployed in a community setting and $2,030,500 when deployed along a corridor. The monthly operating costs are $28,558 when deployed in a community setting and $34,428 when deployed along a corridor.
