Summary Information

This research was conducted by the Volpe Center and builds upon prior work performed by Volpe and other agencies for the Federal Transit Administration under the Advanced Public Transportation System (APTS) Program. A number of studies and surveys of APTS technology applications were reviewed to identify major deployments and benefits derived. Although the study focused primarily on benefits of APTS technologies, the study provided system cost information, and described the functional components of transit operational software and the computer aided dispatching systems associated with fixed-bus and demand responsive transit systems.

The cost of demand-responsive operational software and computer-aided dispatching systems can vary depending on the transit mode, application, and system functionality. System costs can range from $10,000 to greater than $50,000 per deployment. Low-end systems can facilitate scheduling, accounting, and report generation activities. Higher-end systems provide more advanced transit demand management features such as, automated passenger registration, real-time trip scheduling, communications with digital mobile messaging systems, and data exchange with GIS and AVL fleet management systems.
