Summary Information

An article from the Pocono Record, a local paper in Pennsylvania, reported that an expansion of the traffic monitoring system that includes cameras, dynamic message boards and highway advisory radio will provide real-time traffic information in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The seven cameras will be placed on Interstates 80 and 380 by 2015, adding to an existing traffic monitoring system. The camera system is monitored from the Transportation Management Center (TMC) in Allentown, PA between 5:45am and 8pm, with the remaining hours monitored by staff in PennDOT's District 6 TMC. Information about traffic congestion and incidents are conveyed to the public, PA State Police and emergency responders.

The $4,300,000 estimate includes installation and hookups to communications infrastructure for the cameras. In total, the project includes seven cameras that can be rotated 360 degrees and a range of two miles, twelve dynamic message signs, six highway advisory radio transmitters, and five highway advisory radio beacons.
