Summary Information

This study tested the use of a dynamic late lane merge system installed at three work zones on I-94 and I-64 in Michigan during the 2006 construction season (July 17, 2006 through October 9, 2006). The system used microwave traffic sensors, a master controller with wireless communications, and a series of portable dynamic message signs (DMS) to advise drivers of definite merge points when average traffic speeds dropped below pre-set threshold levels.

Cost data collected as part of an economic analysis used to assess the economic viability of the system are shown below.
