Evaluation Report for ITS for Voluntary Emission Reduction: An ITS Operational Test for Real-Time Vehicle Emissions Detection

May 1997
Denver,Colorado,United States

Summary Information

This operational test combined the use of dynamic message sign (DMS) and a roadside detection device to provide real-time emission information to motorist about the vehicle they were driving. The system was installed in Denver Colorado at an interstate freeway off-ramp. As vehicles entered the ramp, their emissions where monitored and results displayed on the DMS. The detector operates by utilizing IR detectors to determine the amount of Carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and Carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by the vehicle. After conducting interviews of motorist driving past the system it was determined that over half of those interviewed believed that the system was valuable for motivating people to repair their vehicles. 1.6 percent of motorist had actually done some repair in response (more men then women) and 8 percent planned to conduct repair.
