Summary Information

One of the findings in a 2003 Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Concept Study was that there would be significant benefit to integrating the Virginia State Police (VSP) Division 1 Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and the Richmond Smart Traffic Center (STC). Data from the VSP CAD system would contain near real-time status of events dispatched to the police.

Integration of the VSP data with the Richmond STC consisted of two components. On the VSP side, some software modifications and modest hardware additions were made so that data on traffic incidents dispatched to the police could be sent to the traffic center. On the STC side, more significant software modifications were made so that the incoming VSP data could be tightly integrated with the Transportation Management System (OpenTMS) at a detailed level. Software modifications included updating and customizing the OpenTMS Incident Management subsystem to utilize the integrated data more effectively.

Funding for the project was provided via the ITS Integration Program with state funds used for the match. The development of the STC integration was completed during 2003 - 2004 for $249,200. The table below, provided by VDOT, shows a breakout of component costs.
