Adaptive Control Software - LITE: Before and After Traffic Analysis Report, State Highway 70 - City of Bradenton, Florida

Summary Information

This study assessed the benefits of Adaptive Control Software Lite (ACS Lite) on State Route 70 in Bradenton, FL using a before and after analysis. ACS Lite is a software tool for optimization of traffic signal timing splits and offsets in real time. The study used field data including traffic volume counts (pneumatic tubes), travel time, speed, and delay (collected by probe vehicles). Volume counts were collected for a minimum of a 72-hour weekday period within the before and after study periods. Volumes were used to assess changes in traffic patterns during the before and after study periods. The before data was collected from April 2 to April 5, 2006. The after data was collected from July 16 to July 19, 2006.

Benefits

All of the performance measures improved in runs with ACS Lite, accounting for a 9 percent reduction in network traffic volumes between before and after periods. Compared to the ‘before’ results, in the ‘after’ period:
  • Travel time decreased by 32.6 seconds (12 percent).
  • Number of stops decreased by 0.7 (28 percent).
  • Stopped delay decreased by 13 seconds.
  • Travel time delay decreased by 29.5 seconds (28 percent).
  • The analysis shows that there would be an annual savings of approximately $757,000 due to these improvements.
