Summary Information

A busy intersection with high-volume pedestrian traffic in downtown Boulder, Colorado, was equipped with an illuminated crosswalk. The illuminated crosswalk covers 4 lanes and consists of a series of four flashing in-pavement lights per lane and four flashing pedestrian warning signs (two in each direction). The system, in operation between the Justice Center and the 11th and Canyon intersection, has been designed to be manually activated by pedestrians at the crosswalk. Pedestrian safety systems of this design are especially useful in areas where overhead clearance is restricted or suspension of overhead lighting is too expensive. Design and development costs are minimal. Actual system costs range from $6,000 to 8,000 and installation costs range from $2,000-$8,000. The cost of a pedestrian crossing illumination system with automated activation would be greater.
