Summary Information

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently completed architectures and pre-deployment plans for five of the state's seven regions. As part of this process, MDOT performed benefit-cost analysis for the Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) deployment in four regions: North, Bay, Grand, and Superior. The benefit-cost analysis of RWIS deployment included capital costs (which were annualized to compute the net benefits and benefit-cost ratios) and annual O&M costs for each region.

The cost data were based upon the Superior Region RWIS Concept of Operations completed in 2007. The number of Environmental Sensor Stations (ESSs) to be deployed were estimated at 15 in the Bay Region, 34 in the Superior Region, and 50 in the North Region.
